This course will continue developing intermediate Slovene language skills by reading and studying short, authentic, and contemporary Slovene texts, predominantly Slovene poetry, lyrics, and social media posts. Every week we will work with texts to explore grammar patterns in action, increase vocabulary in a natural way, refine pronunciation and intonation, and expand knowledge of relevant cultural and social tendencies. Optional homework sheets will be provided every week and reviewed the following class. In addition, this course will lightly introduce beginner fundamentals of Slovenia’s surrounding languages (i.e., Italian, Croatian, Hungarian, and German) for the purposes of comparison and reinforcement of Slovene linguistic and cultural knowledge.

This Spring 2026 we will focus on the basics of the Slovene language while learning about Slovene visual arts. In the seven sessions in April and May, we will study the Slovene alphabet as a visual representation of the spoken language and we will practice describing images using everyday grammatical constructions. To do this, each week we will be looking at examples of Slovene paintings as portals into the broader history and significance of Slovene art, artists, movements, and museums. Optional homework sheets will be provided each week and reviewed in class. In recent courses, we have been reading rich authentic texts in order to increase vocabulary; this time, we will be refining the ability to observe and interpret objects in space, and we will be practicing how to recycle and internalize simple patterns in everyday speech. This course will be appropriate for beginners and newcomers to the language, as well as continuing intermediate learners who wish to refresh foundational knowledge and skills.
